Sydney Park,
located at the intersections of N. Brunswick, N. Morris, and
Floyd Avenue, (location
map) has the reputation of being the smallest
park in the City of Richmond, Virginia’s park system. At its
widest, this triangular park is only 60 feet by about 160 feet
long. Our neighbors include the residents of the lower Fan,
Garden Club, World Cup Coffee, and Virginia Commonwealth
University’s School of Dance and their Day Care Center.
The cedar tree
at the north end of the park was the site for holiday caroling
and neighborhood celebrations by the many children who formerly
inhabited the area and attended the elementary school across the
street. Today, children from VCU’s day care center explore the
park looking for bugs as a learning exercise, enjoy snacks in
the sun, and play. Neighborhood moms sit on the benches enjoying
a cup of coffee and each other’s company, while keeping an eye
on their toddlers. Sometimes guitarists practice, bicycle tours
take a break, and, occasionally, you will even find folks
playing bocce here!
On a very
frugal budget, the Friends of Sydney Park transformed this
little green space from a litter and weed infested parcel to an
inviting place for sitting in the sun, picnicking, relaxing –
whatever. We installed the trash receptacles, replaced the
broken benches, installed brick entrance to the park, limbed up
the hollies and crape myrtles at the south end of the park,
installed the granite park marker, and planted the bulbs and
beds. Projected future enhancements include new fencing, more
plantings, additional walkways, and additional benches to
increase the usefulness of the little parcel to the surrounding
community.
 In
a compromise with the needs of city-dwellers, even though dogs
are prohibited from city parks, pet owners are permitted to walk
their dogs on a leash in the park. In accordance with city
ordinances, owners are responsible for picking up after their
dogs. The Friends of Sydney Park purchase Mutt-Mitts ($58 for a
case of 800 mitts) and stock the Mutt-Mitt dispenser at the
northeast entrance of the park.
