Board of Directors Meeting Summary - Wednesday June 21, 2006, 8:15 am
Landmark Theater

Foundation President Casey Cockerham called the meeting to order.

The Hermitage Road Historic District Association applied for partner status and was accepted by board members. The group plans to raise funds to restore and preserve the historic marker near Bryan Park, and do landscaping in the area.

P, R & CF Liaison, Larry Miller reported that the conservation easement progress report was presented to Council on June 12. Some areas need tweaking over the subsequent 30 days. The plan is to go to VOF to negotiate specific terms by late summer, and to take a good working draft to Council for adoption in early fall.  Signage has come in from the Department of Conservation and Recreation to identify properties that are protected in perpetuity.  Also,a grant is being submitted for 6F protection for pocket parks, and a 50/50 matching grant is being requested from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to benefit 4 – 5 Fan district parks, and the Broad Rock Complex.  Regarding the budget, the majority of proposed capital improvement projects will move forward.

Treasurer, Carl Otto reported that all partners should have their first quarter reports, and to let him know if this is not the case. The audit is moving along.

Joyce Stargardt distributed a list of board members, and dates of expiration of their terms. Joyce will e-mail members to ask them to extend their terms of service.  Joyce also mentioned a possible get-together in July or August for Friends of Scuffletown Park, and the Foundation. She hopes to include staff from the P, R & CF department who do maintenance on Scuffletown Park.

Bill Conkle reported that the Friends of Jefferson Park are continuing their efforts, and expressed a concern that the East End Community Center has been dropped from the mayor’s budget.

Mary Lois Mitchum described the It Starts in Parks event that took place on June 10, expressing thanks to all who participated, and saying that an estimated 4,500 – 5,000 people attended. The event will be repeated on June 9, 2007.

Pat Daniels reported that the Monroe Park Advisory Council met with the Urban Design Commission regarding removing roadways. They had received an offer from VCU for fill dirt, but didn’t get what they wanted. The Department of Community Development is seeking to hire a landscape architect with experience in historical restoration and restoration of urban public spaces.
