A Message from the Foundation's Executive Director

Dear Foundation Partners and Friends:

I hope everyone had a good summer. There are a few events coming up that you might be interested in:

A new Foundation partner group, Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, will be commemorating John Marshall’s 252nd birthday helping to sponsor three events on Monday, Sept 24th:

  • At 9 a.m. help celebrate Richmond’s “favorite son” and Revolutionary War hero, John Marshall, to the sounds of Fife and Drum, on his birthday, at the historic John Marshall House, 818 E. Marshall Street in downtown Richmond. Limited on-street parking for visitors will be available.
  • At 11 am, at the Shockoe Hill Cemetery, there will be the unveiling of a new a state historic marker at the john Marshal Gravesite; and
  • At 5:45 p.m., experience the exciting sights and sounds of the Marshall University Fife and Drum Corps from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia as they perform an exhibition march to music in the Library of Virginia foyer. A Concert of music from the period of John Marshall (1755-1835) will be presented in the Library audi­torium Enjoy refreshments and meet the band following the concert.

New Board Members Needed: The Foundation’s Board of Directors is interested in expanding (current membership of 12). If you, or someone you know is interested in helping to improve the City’s parks, recreation centers and programs, urban forest and tree planting, and/or the 17th Street farmers market , call or email John Zeugner (288-5005 or jjzeugner@comcast.net) or Joyce Stargardt, Foundation President (353-3736) at JFstarga@aol.com .

Our next RICHMOND RECREATION AND PARKS FOUNDATION meeting is next Wednesday, 19 September 2007 at the Carillon in William Byrd Park. Our meeting will begin at 4:00 PM.

Second Annual “It Starts in Parks” Celebration:
Special thanks to the Friends of Bryan Park, Friends of William Byrd Park, Friends of Forest Hill Park, and Friends of Bandy Field, and many other groups for helping with the City’s parks celebration “It Starts in Parks”, held in Byrd park on Saturday, June 9th. Several thousand citizens attended, entertainment and activities captured lots of kids, and great fun was had by all.

Calendar of Upcoming Board Meetings and Other Events

September 19 - Regular board meeting, Carillon in William Byrd Park
October 17 - Regular board meeting, Chimborazo Park Round House
November 14 - Regular board meeting, Location TBA
December 12 - Board Breakfast, Cafe Ole

Regular board meetings are held at 4:00 pm on the third Wednesday of most months. Locations vary as noted above.  Partners are cordially invited to join any or all Board Meetings.  For directions, please refer to the City's web page for community center information.
