Hurricane
Isabel Tree Replanting Fund
10,000 Trees Campaign
2003-2008
Overview
The 10,000 Trees Campaign goal is to raise funds to
replant 10,000 trees that were destroyed in the City of Richmond
during the devastation from Hurricane Isabel on September 18th,
2003.
The Role of the Foundation
Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation, a non profit
501-(c)-3 charity, in partnership with the City of Richmond’s
Department of Recreation and Parks are planning for the
replanting of these lost trees over the next five years.
Hurricane Isabel’s impact on the City
Our city is fortunate to have over 3,000 acres of parks,
recreation centers, playgrounds, boulevards and public spaces.
All of these areas help shape the character of Richmond to both
our residents and visitors. The devastation of Hurricane Isabel
caused us to lose a whole generation of trees. A great deal of
the impact was felt over the months following September 2003 but
an even greater impact will be felt over the next and future
generations if we do not act to replenish our urban forest now.
First Tree Replanting Targeted William Byrd Park
Last year, working with the City’s Urban Forestry Division
and the Parks and Recreation Department, the Foundation renewed its
efforts to raise funds for tree replanting (10,000 Trees
Campaign) and decided to target specific parks on a year by year
basis. Luck Stone generously offered to be our sponsor this
first year, and
helped plant 200 trees in Byrd Park on
Saturday, November 13th, 2004. This year, we’ll be replanting trees
in Forest Hill Park, and then Joseph Bryan Park in 2006. Other parks
and select streets will follow.
Donations needed Now
The Foundation asks you to consider
contributing to support planting of specimen trees (unusual and
noteworthy trees) in Forest Hill Park this winter. Additionally,
funds are needed for watering and ongoing maintenance for the
trees in Byrd Park.
Donations of any size are welcome - $10, 25, $100, or larger if
you'd like. Please make checks payable to Richmond Recreation and Parks
