Richmond Tree Stewards

The Richmond Tree Stewards is a group of citizen volunteers dedicated to promoting and protecting the health of Richmond’s Urban Forest.  The group's mission is to educate citizens on the needs of the urban forest, raise community awareness of its value, and actively participate in its care.  Richmond Tree Stewards is supported by Trees Virginia and works in cooperation with the City of Richmond Urban Forestry Division.

Tree Stewards complete approximately 25 hours of training in classes taught by professionals from the tree care industry and related professions.  Class topics include tree identification and biology, proper pruning and planting practices, pathology, and tree selection.  Program graduates agree to contribute community service working on projects that promote Richmond’s Urban Forest.  The Richmond Tree Stewards began in January 2004 with a first class of 27 individuals and has already contributed over 250 hours of community service on projects such as a citywide street tree inventory, small tree pruning, and an Arbor Day event.

The group meets regularly and new classes will continue forming as interest arises.  For more information on joining Richmond Tree Stewards contact Norm Brown of the City's Urban Forestry Division at (804) 405-0632
